An intermediate zone
species, they thrive between the open sandy and the rocky areas, so it is a
good idea to have both rocks and sand in the aquarium.
Males can be
aggressive and mixtures of conspecies should be prevented. They are however
no match for the faster Mbuna and stronger Central American cichlids.
In
the aquarium, they tend to lose their bright yellow dress so need to be fed
colour enhancing food to maintain its bright yellow dress. Maximum size in
the aquarium is 6 inches while in the wild, they are usually smaller.
