Profile and Description of Central America Cichlids

Archocentrus Sajica (T-Bar Cichlid, T-Bar Convict)

Profile:

Distribution : Central America

Size : Up to 5 inches. Females are generally much smaller.

PH : 7.2 to 8.

Temperature : 240 C to 280

Hardness : Neutral to Slightly hard

Diet : Omnivorous. Flake, freeze fried & frozen and pellet food. Live food to induce breeding.

Breeding : Cave spawner. Digs during breeding.

Sexual Difference :  Females are much smaller than males. Males have longer fins.

Description:

This is the cousin of the convict cichlids. There are generally 2 variants : the yellow/gold and the purple/blue type. Some have blue or very striking eyes. Prefer caves or bogwood during breeding. Upturned pots are quickly occupied. They can dig during spawning.  Paired T-Bar cichlids are  very aggressive towards same species during breeding.  Best to remove either the male or female after fries hatch as often the males will kill the female. Put the female back after 2-3 weeks after the fries are independent. Males often harassed females to death and a tight cover is essential as the harassed females often jumped out of the tank.

Like their cousins, the Sajica cichlids can be quite easy to breed, provide plenty of food and with good water condition, spawning is a given.

T-Bar cichlids are active and inquisitive. Though they are smaller than most Central America cichlids, they are quite capable of holding off other tank mates especially during spawning. The female Sajica cichlid in the picture is not exactly in the pink of health and the females are quite prone to waste away after a few brood.
